Job Description

Reports to: Engineering Manager

Department:     Engineering

Status:        Full-Time/Exempt

Industry:           Aerospace

Schedule:   Monday – Friday, occasional weekends

Typical Hours:  8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, overtime as needed

Purpose

Near Space Corporation’s (NSC) Electrical Engineer utilizes their analytical and technical skills to develop new systems or improve the performance and efficiency of existing products. The Electrical Engineer performs detailed design, testing, programming, and assembly of flight avionics for electrical systems of unmanned aerospace projects, including both high-altitude balloons and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). The ability to troubleshoot electronics and understand electronic component testing is essential to being successful at NSC.

As an analytical thinker, the Electrical Engineer matures project and flight design requirements into actual avionics hardware that performs required system functions. A successful Electrical Engineer develops new systems, makes improvements to existing systems, designs and conducts a variety of tests on electronic components, and troubleshoots and solves technical problems.

Essential Functions

  • Designs, tests, and integrates C3 (Command, Control, & Communications), video transmission, tracking, and termination systems for UAS carrying customer payloads
  • Installs, tests, and troubleshoots avionics and communications equipment
  • Prepares wiring and schematic drawings for avionics and electrical systems using computer-based design and drafting tools
  • Utilizes electronic test equipment to verify avionics and electrical systems meet design requirements
  • Calibrates, troubleshoots, repairs, designs, and/or installs electronic equipment
  • Develops electrical schematics to meet electrical requirements, guide the layout process of printed circuit boards, select appropriate components, support fabrication, lead test and qualification efforts of completed designs
  • Follows industry standard practice of establishing and reviewing requirements, conducting preliminary, interim and critical design reviews, create released documentation packages, revise released documentation per an engineering change order process
  • Creates system interconnect drawings, determine need for and create cable and harness drawings and Bills of Material
  • Performs a technology refresh as necessary for legacy designs
  • Supports flight operations, including flight-line activities and ground station operations, as assigned

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities except those that consist of managing projects and processes.

This job operates in a professional aviation environment and position diversity varies between office, flight hangar, production floor, flight line, and field operations.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This job operates primarily in a professional office environment and is a medium work role.

  1. Must be able to remain in a stationary position 75% of the time.
  2. Occasionally operates and moves about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, such as computers, phones, photocopiers, calculators, printers, etc.
  3. Frequently ascends/descends stairs to perform essential functions.
  4. Frequently communicates with internal and external partners and must be able to communicate thoughts clearly, document, remember information, and organize tasks.
  5. Must be able to observe and assess company documents.
  6. Occasionally extends hands and arms to access cabinets or essential objects. 
  7. Frequently performs motions of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers for typing, writing, etc.
  8. Occasionally positions self to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl during flight operations.
  9. Occasionally moves equipment weighing up to 50lbs.
  10. Occasionally using upper extremities to press against something with steady force.
  11. Occasionally using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  12. Occasionally exposed to dust, extreme temperatures, mechanical, chemical, electrical, and explosive hazards, and high-pressure gases.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with 3-5 years professional experience
  • 5+ years of experience with avionics/electronic systems
  • EMI control, RF and system level testing experience
  • Component integration and wiring harness design experience
  • Telemetry systems experience
  • Design knowledge of electronic and communications systems, components, and materials
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including: Word, Excel, E-mail, and web-enabled apps
  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Lead Electrical Engineer on UAS platforms
  • Design knowledge of UAS electrical systems, components, and materials.
  • Proficient electronic assembly skills including soldering and handling of sensitive electronic components.
